Udvartana

Udvartana

Udvartana is a traditional Ayurvedic therapy involving the application of herbal powders in a specific manner with massage techniques. The name comes from “Urdhva” meaning upward and “Vartanam” meaning to move, referring to the upward rubbing motion used during the procedure. It is one of the most effective detoxifying and fat reducing treatments in Ayurveda.

How It Works

The therapy involves massage using medicated powders (called choornas) —
dry or mixed with herbal oils.

The upward strokes generate heat and friction, which help in:

  • Breaking down subcutaneous fat tissue
  • Improving blood circulation and lymphatic drainage
  • Exfoliating dead skin cells
    Stimulating metabolism and removing toxins

Benefits of Udvartanam

  • Weight Management: Aids in fat metabolism and inch loss when combined with lifestyle
    changes.
  • Improved Skin Texture: Makes skin smoother, clearer, and more radiant.
  • Reduces Cellulite: Breaks down stubborn fat deposits and improves tone.
  • Boosts Circulation: Enhances blood and lymphatic flow.
  • Detoxification: Helps eliminate ama (toxins) from the body.
  • Relieves Stress and Lethargy: The massage energizes and refreshes both mind and
    body.
  • Balances Kapha Dosha: Especially beneficial in Kapha-related disorders like obesity,
    sluggishness, and heaviness.
