Shirodhara
Ayurvedic Oil Therapy for Deep Relaxation & Hormonal Balance
Shirodhara is a deeply meditative Ayurvedic therapy in which a continuous stream of warm, herbal oil is gently poured over the forehead (Ajna Chakra) — the third eye center. It calms the nervous system, stimulates the pineal and pituitary glands, and is known as a powerful tool to address insomnia, anxiety, burnout, and hormonal imbalances.
How It Works
- A rhythmic stream of oil is poured from a copper pot onto the center of the forehead
- The oil flows across the scalp, stimulating the nervous and endocrine systems
- Induces a deep state of rest and parasympathetic activation
- Often preceded by a head, neck, and shoulder massage

Research-Backed Perspective
Modern studies support many of the traditional claims:
A 2016 study published in The Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine found that head massage significantly reduces cortisol levels (the stress hormone), enhancing relaxation and well-being.
A 2020 study in Evidence-Based Complementary and Alternative Medicine showed improved sleep quality and reduction in anxiety scores after regular scalp massages.
Research in Journal of Physical Therapy Science (2014) found that scalp massage increases cranial blood flow, which can improve cognitive function and reduce symptoms of fatigue.
These studies validate the role of head massage in enhancing nervous system balance, improving sleep, and reducing stress-related symptoms.
Shirodhara felt like meditation without effort. My mind became silent, and I finally slept through the night after weeks. It’s now part of my stress toolkit.
