Shirodhara
Shirodhara
Ayurvedic Oil Therapy for Deep Relaxation & Hormonal Balance
Shirodhara is a deeply meditative Ayurvedic therapy in which a continuous stream of warm, herbal oil is gently poured over the forehead (Ajna Chakra) — the third eye center. It calms the nervous system, stimulates the pineal and pituitary glands, and is known as a powerful tool to address insomnia, anxiety, burnout, and hormonal imbalances.

How It Works
- A rhythmic stream of oil is poured from a copper pot onto the center of the forehead
- The oil flows across the scalp, stimulating the nervous and endocrine systems
- Induces a deep state of rest and parasympathetic activation
- Often preceded by a head, neck, and shoulder massage

Research-Backed Perspective
- A 2023 clinical trial in the Journal of Ayurveda and Integrative Medicine found that 7 sessions of Shirodhara significantly reduced cortisol levels and improved sleep scores in women with high stress and PCOS.
- Research on transdermal oil absorption and forehead thermoreceptors suggests that Shirodhara activates the vagus nerve, improving autonomic nervous system balance.
- Oils like Brahmi Taila and Ksheerabala Taila are neuroprotective and contain adaptogenic herbs that influence dopamine, serotonin, and melatonin pathways.
Shirodhara felt like meditation without effort. My mind became silent, and I finally slept through the night after weeks. It’s now part of my stress toolkit.
